Munnar is a splendid hill town, with picture perfect beauty and aromatic tea plantations. It is a premier centre for tea growing in Kerala, and more than 12,000 hectares of land is under tea plantations. Munnar is situated on three mountain ranges called Nallathanni, Mudrapuzha and Kundala. It is home to some of the most endangered species of wildlife, and enchants you with its breathtaking views.
Places to visit
Church
There is a church, a temple and a mosque on the cliffs overlooking the town showing the cultural diversity of India. The church is a storehouse of the colonial past of the town, and is worth visiting.
Eravikulam Nationl park
It is one of the most visited places in Munnar. Wild goats, one of the most endangered animals nestles in this wildlife sanctuary. To protect this animal the place was declared to be a protected wildlife sanctuary in 1950s. It is situated 7000 ft, above sea level and gives stupendous views.
Tea Museum
It is run by Tata tea, to show the tourist the various stages of tea manufacture. It has historical frescos, artifacts and relics on display showing the history of tea producing in the place.
Athukad and other waterfalls
Situated 8 kms from Munnar are the roaring Athukad falls that looks magnificient in all its vastness. Other two waterfalls in the place are Cheeyapara and Valara falls.
Madupatty dam
This huge dam with the height of 160 ft and a huge reservoir is a wonderful sight to behold. One can also take cruise on the reservoir surrounded by lush green hills.
Lockhart Gap
It is an amazing spot to get a bird’s eye view of the entire Bison valley. The valley got its name because of abundance of Bison or Gaur there.
There are many other places like Sethuparvathipuram dam, Pothanmedu, Nyamakad gap, etc. to visit. All these places are filled with the indefinable beauty.
Best time to visit
Best time to visit the place is from September to May when the monsoon is absent. The place usually has very cold weather all year round.
How to reach?
By Air-Cochin international Airport is the nearest airport that is 4 hours drive away from the place.
By Rail-Nearest railway station is Ernakulam junction, which is again 4 hours drive away from the town.
By Road-The place is well connected to other towns in Kerala, and the drive is a pleasant one through lush green mountain hills.
