This town sandwiched between the Western Ghats on the east and paddy fields and the Vembanad Lake of Kuttanad on the west. This land with amazing landscapes has enchanting backwaters, beautiful paddy fields and other wonderful places. During monsoon, the rain-kissed fields and trees preen and pose for the shining sun. It is heart of Kerala’s rubber and spice plantation. This natural escape is a treat to any traveler.

Places to visit
Thirunakkara Mahadeva temple
This simple and spacious temple of Lord Shiva is more than 500 years old. It shows the pristine Kerala temple architecture, and is an edifice of beauty with grace.
St Mary’s Knanaya Church
This church is situated atop a hill and is also called the Big Church. The ceiling and altar of the church are intricately carved, and the interiors are beautifully decorated with murals depicting scenes from the Bible.
Thazathangadi Juma Masjid
This is one of the oldest mosques in India, buit on the bank of Meenachil River. It is a wonderful sight to see the mosque made of teak on the bank of the river. It is visited by a number of people as it around 1000 years old.
Backwaters
Many operators provide full day package tours on the lake of Vembanad. These tours have stops at a man made island called R-Block, then a bird sanctuary, te Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, and at last the Pathiramanal Island. These backwater trips show you some of the most beautiful scenes of Kerala.

Best time to visit Kottayam is October to February. Though the place looks splendid in the monsoon season.

By Air- Cochin international Airport is the nearest airport, which is two hours drive away from Kottayam.
By Rail- The place is well connected with other towns through rail. There is Kottayam station in the town.
By Road- It is well connected to other major towns of South India.
